Good Singapore Food Sites & Blogs

Author: Benson  |  Category: About Singapore, Food

Now that you’re keen on coming to Singapore, FOOD must be one key attraction that you must never, ever lose your emphasis on as Singapore is a multi-cultural country with high standards of many culinary dishes.

I’m not a good reviewer when it comes to food but these are the sites which I highly recommend that you could visit before hitting the Singapore shore so you could plan your food itinerary.

Singapore Food Blogs

I Eat I Shoot I Post – The number one site introduced to me by Selina. This ardent site shoots unbelievable food photos and describes the food reviewed down to its bones. Chilling but true, this blog covers most of Singapore hawker food and you JUST HAVE to visit it.

Lady Iron ChefBrad, a photographer who specialises in food shots has been writing this food blog since March 2007. Great reviews of food joints in Singapore, he also has his ways with his food photos that somewhat makes me drool easily. (Of course he should ain’t it? Since he’s a photographer.. duh)

J23KBlogs - Reviews of the latest hip food joint to visit coupled with great photo shots by Justin. (I’m starting to wonder if there’s any trend to this hmm)

Singapore Food Sites

HungryGoWhere – Another undisputed leader in online Singapore food ratings. Apparently spreading wings to other countries like Malaysia, Hong Kong and Australia.

InSing.com – I was surprised, but InSing is doing well even for its food review sections. Check this review site where the community is getting bigger and opinions are getting stronger for Singapore food.

Have you got any new sites to suggest to this list? Feel free to share with me so it could benefit everybody!

Haji Lane – Chicken Kebab!

Author: Benson  |  Category: About Singapore, Food

Now wait, I have never been a fan of kebabs to be plain honest. Nope, never.

The Eygptian Restaurant

The Eygptian Restaurant

Karen and I met up with Nicholas at Haji Lane (The Arab Street area) outside this funky looking Egyptian restaurant. The ambience was somewhat similar as of you visiting a Kopitiam in Little India having roti prata. Pretty cosy and decent. You have egyptian songs playing in the background (verified by asking one of their staff). There’re different types of kebabs to choose from, as you can see from the menu.

The Menu

The Menu

We ordered some special drinks on the menu which costs us somewhat $9.00 for 3 different ones. My tastebud doesn’t tell me anything special about a glass of jasmine and iced lemon tea though.

Here comes the main course.

The Chicken Kebab is Nice

The Chicken Kebab is Nice

The meat is tender and the sauce is savoury. The spread of salad and potato wedges are amusingly well proportioned. I’d highly recommend getting a piece of this action when you’re around in Arab Street. Having said that, I have never noticed Arab Street to have their own unique stand in the buzzling Singapore city. You have shi sha boutiques, cafes in preserved shop-houses and alot of shopping.

Visit Arab Street if you can when you’re here in Singapore. It’s not far away from G4 Station ;)

Benson’s rating for the kebabs –

nono (3.0 out of 5.0)

OK let’s start with the light food, for those who love to eat snack there is this one very famous local snack stall off all time OLD CHANG KEE. they serve from curry puff ( my all time favourite, yum yum ) to chicken nugget and they always make it fresh daily, coz the business is so good they don’t even have the change to keep it and sale it on the next day. The very good news, they’re just right across the street of G4 Station!

Famous Hawker Centre – Newton

Newton Food Centre (纽顿熟食中心) is a major food centre located in Newton, Singapore. The food centre was promoted by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) as a tourist attraction for sampling Singaporean cuisine. It was first opened in 1971 and it closed down in 2005 as the government wanted to revamp the food centre. The food centre then went through a major renovation before reopening on 1 July 2006.

The best places to eat in Singapore would be any hawker centre. The variety is astounding and the prices are low. There are many hawker centres, but Newton Food Centre must be one of the best. it’s easy to get to (just across from Newton MRT Station), it’s airy and there’re plenty of stalls to choose from. Most importantly, it’s still got the best oyster omelet, popiah, barbequed chicken wings and barbequed seafood (like stingray topped with sambal chilli) in the whole of Singapore. Shiok!!BEST!!

The best time to stop by Newton would be for dinner and supper. This usually means from 7.00 p.m. onwards. In the day, many stalls are not opened. More importantly, many stalls tend to have more than 1 stallholder – one in the day and one at night selling different foods. Inevitably, the night stallholder tends to be the “famous one”.

To go to NEWTON FOOD CENTRE you need to take bus no 48, 66 and 170 and it’s only few stop away from G4. Ask me or Waren or any of our friendly receptionists whoever is on duty at desk.

Affordable Restaurants

For travellers who prefer restaurants there are a few good restaurants at PARADIZ CENTRE ( 1 selegie road, 5 min walk). there are steamboat, japanese food, western food, thai, indonesian and lots more for you to discover

side and front view of PARADIZ CENTRE

DESSERT

The best dessert around G4 probably is the jelly beancurd (do hua). it so soft it will melt in your mouth slurpz.. and the best 1 is rochor beancurd, they do served other snack that goes well with their beancurd e.q egg tart, fried dough flitter (you tiao) etc. trust me IT’S GOOD.

ROCHOR original beancurd stall with its famous beancurd YUMMY!!!

But of course if you guys just wanna chill at G4 we do have a 24hrs cafe ” BACKYARD BISTRO” which serves chilled beer, great finger food, sandwiches and salad. by the way they also have pool table, free WIFI and sports channels. YEAH!!!!!

So this is the end of our food hunting for the moment, hope you enjoy it and hope you see you guys in G4. CHEERS!!!

Leo
