Yes, the Youth Olympic Flame arrives in host city Singapore.

The arrival of the Youth Olympic Flame in Singapore was celebrated with great fanfare this evening by an exuberant 3,000-strong crowd at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Kent Ridge Campus.

After a 15-day journey around the world, the President of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan, lit the cauldron for the first time in Singapore under a shower of fireworks, marking the start of the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame (JYOF) in the host city.

Singapore Armed Forces

Hey guys! I will be away from G4 Station starting from 28th June 2010 to serve my country for 2 week! So you wouldn’t be able to see me around and if you have any enquiries, please contact us instead of me so that i can serve in peace T_T

Although i will miss all my colleagues and guests here, but serving the nation to me is really meaningful and fun! Taking a break from all the frontdesk/supervising role and heading out to the jungle to train back my killer instinct ^^

In G4, we pride ourselves when it comes to our work and the experiences of our guests. Not to mention the most important two elements, safety and comfort. When any of our guests check in, my Team G4 will painstakingly yet professionally explain the Do’s and Dont’s in the premises.

We have 25 cameras on the walkways and 24-hours ground staff so you can really be assured of having a pleasant stay with us.

With that, I’d like to introduce to you our house rules in the hostel that either irks you or makes you feel safe

The House Rules

Checking in and out Timing

Our earliest check-in time is 1pm and the latest check out time is at 12pm. This is to ensure that your beds are always prim and proper (We need that time allowance)

Strictly No Smoking

Our G4 hostel is a no-smoking hostel. Smoking could be done in designated smoking areas.

We emphasis on being environmental friendly and ask of the guests to turn off the lights and air conditioning when they leave the room.

Room/ Dormitory Limitations

No food in the bedrooms, you don’t want any bed bugs or funny creepy crawlers to come do you? We have small little pantry areas for you to use.

You’re also not allowed to bring external guests up into the hostel. I think this is only fair and in case your friends will might cause any trouble.

Do Unto Others as You Would Have Them Do Unto You

No noise zone after 10pm, so others can sleep. Sanitizing of hands for our internet kiosk stations is a must so you’ll have a clean keyboard and mouse to use. (Of course our staff will still clean them on a daily basis, but doesn’t it feel better? )

Luggage and Personal Belongings

Though this is a safe hostel, with all cameras and locker cabinets, you’re still advised to keep important things with you. Things such as passports and cash yada yada (:

We reserve the rights to invite you to leave our premises should you violate or cause disturbances to your fellow backpacker’s. We’re powerful (err, kinda)

大家好！！！！我是Nicole，G4 senior part-timer.^0^

G4周年庆—Nicole

咳，千呼万唤下终于上载 了第一篇blog。这是关于Nicole的自我介绍，在G4工作将近两年之后，重新认识自己。哈哈，听起来有点怪怪的。：）

好吧，不用怀疑 的是，G4 staff里华文最好的就是偶啦，娃哈哈…..想当年风华正茂，书生意气，挥斥方遒，指点江山，激昂文字, 文科班出身的偶….三年前到新加坡后转学理了。现就读淡马锡理工学院，媒体与通讯专业。一年前成为新加坡永久居民。爸妈都在中国青岛忙生意，只有我孤 军奋战在新加坡。听起来有点sad? 不用担心，我有很多朋友，同学，生活很充实很开心哒！：p

说到兴趣，女孩子嘛当然是购物逛街啦！新加坡很 小，只是一个城市却挤得下超过250间购物中心，几乎各种名牌都能找的到，比如Topshop,  Forever 21, Dorothy Perkins…..有的国家没有，却在本地找得到很多分店。就这一点来说，在以后的blog中，我会跟大家分享更多购物的好去处，好买物！！^^

私 下会去看电影多过唱K,最近看得《Unmistaken Child 》和《The Karate Kid》都是很不错的电影，值得推荐哦。顺便说一句，新加坡的电影票其实算便宜的，比起上海人幸福多了哈~~像很多同龄人一样，宅在家里的时候也喜欢泡在校内网和facebook上和朋友聊天。

用中文写的blog希望可以为 中国以及其他讲中文的朋友带来方便。有什么询问千万别犹豫问我们，也可以要求用中文回复，一切以您方便为准。

恩…..有句话 说，有朋自远方来，不亦乐乎。在G4工作的同时，认识了很多来自世界各国的朋友，他们热情，乐观，幽默，开阔和对生活拥有无限的激情。正是这种多元文化和 向上精神融合并深入，形成了今天G4这个大家庭的内涵。从开始做工时偶尔会犯糊涂 blur,blur的，到现在驾轻就熟，跟G4一起成长，对我来说是件意义非凡的事。

Hello everyone! It's Dylan yo!

Hey EVERYONE!

I’m Dylan, the newest member of G4 Station! I’m actually a chef by profession, but I’m taking a break from the kitchen till I start culinary school in February in Melbourne. I’m really really looking forward to Melbourne! I absolutely LOVE that place! So meanwhile, here I am part-timing at G4, hoping to make friends from all over the globe!

I’m an avid football fan! I’ve been watching and playing football since I was 10! My teams are Manchester United, Barcelona and Brazil. I’m hoping for Brazil to win the World Cup this year and add another star to the 5 they already have on their jersey. I prefer playing Futsal to the usual 11-a-side game. Futsal is a 5-a-side game that is usually played indoors on a hard court, using a special size 4 ball that doesn’t bounce. It relies on pace and a lot of skills. I prefer it mainly because you get tea ball at your feet a lot more than the 11-a-side game.

Besides football, I also do Aggressive Inline Rollerblading. It is the kind where we grind, spin and do flips. I’ve been doing it since 2002 and I will only stop the day my legs can no longer support me. Most of the time you can find me either at Somerset skatepark or East Coast skatepark. I try to rollerblade about 3-4 times a week. It’s my other form of exercise besides football.

The Dumpling Festival is a colorful festival which is traditionally celebrated during the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, the famous Dumpling festival is celebrated on 16th of June which is today. Dumpling Festival is also named as Duanwu Festival and Dragon Boats Festival. You can find the brief history of dumpling festival here that gives a bit of background information of this festival.

Duanwu commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan. He was a loyal minister serving the King of Chu during the Warring States Period in the third century BC. Initially his sovereign favored Qu Yuan, but over time, his wisdom and erudite ways antagonized other court officials. As a result Qu Yuan was accused of trumped-up charges of conspiracy and ejected by his sovereign. During his exile, Qu Yuan composed many poems to express his anger and sorrow towards his sovereign and people.

In the year 278 B.C., at the age of 37, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Milo River. He clasped a heavy stone to his chest and leaped into the water. Knowing that Qu Yuan was a righteous man, the people of Chu rushed to the river to try to save him. The people desperately searched the waters in their boats looking for Qu Yuan but were unsuccessful in their attempt to rescue him. Every year the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated to commemorate this attempt at rescuing Qu Yuan.

When it was known that Qu Yuan had been lost forever, the local people began the tradition of throwing sacrificial cooked rice into the river for their lost hero. However, a local fisherman had a dream that Qu Yuan did not get any of the cooked rice that was thrown into the river in his honour. Instead the fish in the river were eating the rice. Thus, the locals decided to make zongzi to sink into the river in the hopes that it would reach Qu Yuan’s body. The following year, the tradition of wrapping the rice in bamboo leaves to make zongzi began.

Boat races are held every year and rice is thrown into water on this day in order to give a compliment to the patriot which symbolizes the struggle made to rescue Qu Yuan. Since years, Dumpling festival is one of the most significant festivals celebrated in China. Dumpling festival is marked by consumption of thousands of dumplings and furious races of dragon shaped colorful boats on the loud beats of drums.

In Singapore, during this festival everyone is lazy or the skill has not been really passed on to the later generations. The older generation gets too old to prepare this dish, the working generation is too caught up with work to bother.
